Holcim, Enagás, and Saggas to Launch CO2 capture and storage project at Sagunto Plant

The CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo, the CEO of Holcim España, Ricardo de Pablos, and the Managing Director of Saggas, Santiago Álvarez, have presented the “CO₂necta Project”, which will create an integrated capture, transmission and storage value chain in the Valencian municipality of Sagunto. This will prevent the emission of more than 560 000 t of CO₂ per year in the Valencian Community.

The project will develop a CO₂ capture plant at the Holcim factory in Sagunto. The CO₂ will then be transferred through Enagás infrastructures to the Saggas terminal, located in the Port of Sagunto, where a liquefaction process will be carried out. Once in liquid form, the CO₂ will be transported in ships to its final geological storage.

Strategic impact and partnership model

The consortium formed by Enagás, Holcim and Saggas, is based on the establishment of a pioneering circular economy model – the biogenic portion of the captured CO₂ can be used for the production of e-methanol and other biofuels – and decarbonisation in the municipality of Sagunto and its surroundings. CO₂necta will stimulate the local and national economy, especially in strategic hard-to-abate sectors.

CO₂necta is an example of collaboration between leading companies committed to industry transformation and decarbonisation through innovative technologies and the creation of a benchmark value chain for other sectors.

The CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo, stressed that “CO₂necta contributes with innovative solutions to jointly advance our decarbonisation commitments, especially relevant in strategic sectors that cannot be decarbonised”. He added that “this pioneering project promotes the sustainable management of CO₂ in Spain and Europe, and highlights the role of strategic infrastructures such as Saggas in leading decarbonisation in industry, boosting the competitiveness of the sector”. In this regard, the CEO of Holcim Spain, Ricardo de Pablos, stressed that “industrial decarbonisation requires intersectoral alliances and projects that allow the development of the CO₂ value chain, with transmission infrastructures and logistics hubs to promote economies of scale, making the transformation of industry possible”.

During the visit, Arturo Gonzalo and Ricardo de Pablos toured the Saggas Liquefied Natural Gas terminal – in which Enagás holds a 72.5% stake – and the Holcim factory in Sagunto, key infrastructures in the value chain envisioned by the project.
