World Cement,

Hope Construction Materials is inviting the local community to celebrate its Hope cement plant’s 85th birthday at an attraction-packed open day. The event, which will feature free tours of the works and limestone quarry and rides on a steam train, runs from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 6th September.  Free park and ride facilities are on offer from Hope Village (the railway station and the Sports Club) and once on site, people of all ages will be entertained by the variety of entertainment on offer.

Hope Construction Materials’ Industrial Director Ashley Bryan says:  “Our open days have always been extremely popular in the past and we very much hope that we get a good turnout at this event.  We want visitors to have a fun day and get an insight into our manufacturing operation at the same time.  We are offering minibus tours of the quarry and works, which manufactures up to 1.5 million tonnes of cement each year.  And with our commitment to using rail for cement distribution, and our 85-year history on site, it seemed appropriate to bring in some iconic steam trains as well. Visitors will be able to ride free of charge up and down our branchline, on board a traditional steam train.

“For those local people with long-standing links with the works, they will find our comprehensive historical exhibition interesting – it includes thousands of photos and memorabilia items.  And another display will bring visitors up to date with our current operation and plans for the future.”

For younger visitors a variety of charged activities will also be available including mini-digger rides, face painting, a magician, refreshments and stilt walkers.
