Tarmac begins highways maintenance contract

Tarmac has commenced its five-year highways maintenance contract with Knowsley Council to deliver surfacing, bridge and structures maintenance, gulley cleansing and footway and carriage repairs.

Four apprenticeships are being created as part of the contract, reflecting Tarmac’s commitment to creating local jobs and providing opportunities for young people to begin careers in construction. The company has also committed to using local suppliers to support delivery of the project wherever possible.

Key factors in Tarmac securing the contract were the company’s proven experience of working with clients on similar contracts, as well as its commitment to partnering, quality and delivery.

Paul Fleetham, managing director of Tarmac’s contracting business, said: “This contract is a reflection of our strong track record in delivering high-quality, innovative highways maintenance for local authorities across the UK. We have a highly-skilled and experienced team working with colleagues at Knowsley to deliver a first class service across the borough.”

Speaking when Tarmac’s appointment was announced last November, Cllr Mike Murphy, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “Knowsley’s highway is one of the council’s most valuable assets so it is vital that we have the correct provision in place to ensure this is maintained.

“We have recently been recognised as the best overall performer in the National Highways and Transport Survey 2015 and the new contract with Tarmac will deliver direct efficiencies for the council and will give us a more flexible approach to the service, which is critical to our continued success in the current financial climate. It will also positively support the local economy through employing local apprentices and using local sub-contractors.”
