Cemex Lloseta plant celebrates achievements of environmental improvement programme

World Cement,

Cemex’s Lloseta plant in Mallorca has concluded its 2006 – 2014 programme of environmental improvements. The programme represents an investment of around €16 million and includes a range of initiatives that have lowered the plant’s environmental impact whilst maintaining and enhancing the site’s competitiveness. The improvement programme included lowering sound levels at the plant and reducing dust. The latter was achieved by installing filter bags, covering all raw material and fuel storage areas, and paving surfaces traversed by heavy vehicles. Through the increased utilisation of alternative fuels and installation of more efficient burners, the plant lowered CO2 emissions by 3.8% per tonne of clinker between 2006 and 2014. Cemex Lloseta’s alternative fuel substitution rate has risen from 5% to 35% over the course of the programme, helping it to save some 80 000 tonnes of CO2.

The improvement initiative has coincided with some of the most trying times for the region’s cement industry, during which Spanish cement consumption has continued to decline.

Cemex marked its achievements with a commemorative plaque, as well as a visit from local officials, the President of Cemex and the Director of Cemex in the Balearic Islands.

The Lloseta plant, which is popularly referred to as Pórtland de Mallorca, was established in 1957. It has the capacity to produce 804 000 tpa of cement and 561 000 tpa of clinker. In addition to the Lloseta cement plant, Cemex operates concrete and mortar plants, terminals, silos and quarries in the Balearic Islands, providing 134 direct jobs and over 300 indirect jobs. Construction materials produced by Cemex have been used in a number of projects in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza, including airport terminals, museums and hotels.
