  • The company is once again placing its environmental strategy at the top of its agenda, reaffirming its commitment to producing carbon neutral concrete by 2050.
  • The new 2030 Sustainability Roadmap addresses Health and Safety, Energy and Climate Change, the Circular Economy, Nature and the Environment and Corporate Social Responsibility.
  • Replacing 40% of fossil fuels with alternative fuels and reducing the company’s overall emissions are two of the key goals targeted in the plan.

Cementos Molins has today published its 2030 Sustainability Roadmap that defines the company’s strategy for achieving a 20% reduction in emissions by 2030, using 2020 as the base year. This commitment brings forward the initial emission reduction plans that the company first set out 1990 and places a special emphasis on producing carbon neutral concrete by 2050.

The 2030 Sustainability Roadmap highlights the key role that sustainability plays in Cementos Molins’ strategy and maps out how it is actively tackling five key areas: Health and Safety, Energy and Climate Change, the Circular Economy, Nature and the Environment, and Corporate Social Responsibility. The plan details specific targets for each concept and outlines the initiatives that the company is setting in motion to ensure these targets are met.

“Sustainability is the cornerstone of our strategy here at Cementos Molins and today we are delighted to announce the specific targets that we have set out in our 2030 Sustainability Roadmap. The targets and their corresponding action plans – the result of the hard work and dedication of the Cementos Molins team together with our stakeholders – will help drive our company forward in actively tackling climate change”, highlighted Julio Rodríguez, CEO at Cementos Molins. “We are deeply committed to achieving zero emissions and building a better world for everyone”, he added.

In terms of Health and Safety, Cementos Molins aims to achieve a completely accident-free workplace by 2030. To achieve this, the company will focus on driving a culture of leadership in security, identifying and rectifying any unsafe conduct, reporting and analysing any accidents that take place, tracking proactive indicators and linking health and safety-based targets to performance-related pay.

In the field of Energy and Climate Change, the company aims to cut CO2 emissions by 20% versus 2020 and use renewable energy to source 55% of all electricity consumption. Here, Cementos Molins will focus its efforts on using alternative fuels, maximising energy efficiency, generating renewable energy and minimising its environmental footprint in the production of cement and cement-related products.

Insofar as the Circular Economy is concerned, Cementos Molins plans to achieve an energy substitution rate of 40% by 2030 and significantly reduce the amount of clinker in its cement to 68% across its entire product base. In addition, the 2030 Sustainability Roadmap puts the spotlight on further developing thermal recovery processes, driving down the amount of waste generated and increasing the use of recycled materials in the company’s products and processes.

With regard to Nature and the Environment, the roadmap sets the target of halving particulate matter (PM) emissions, reducing NOx by 40%, and cutting SOx by 10%. In addition, by 2030 all Cementos Molins plants will have a biodiversity programme in place. The company plans to ensure these targets are met by carrying out alternative fuel analysis, guaranteeing round-the-clock emissions measurement at the plants and putting in place effective emission reduction measures and plans, as well as measures to ensure efficient water usage. It also intends to champion targeted reforestation plans as part of its biodiversity programme.

In terms of Corporate Social Responsibility, by 2030 it will have signed official agreements with the local communities across all of its operations and at least 23% of management positions will be occupied by females. Corporate volunteer programmes, affiliations with social partners, local procurement and employee satisfaction surveys and action plans will all also be key in steering the company to success along its 2030 roadmap.
