thyssenkrupp ranks among the world’s leading climate companies

thyssenkrupp has welcomed the Paris climate agreement that came into effect this month. Among other targets the agreement aims at limiting greenhouse gas emissions to net zero in the second half of this century. thyssenkrupp wants to contribute to this effort and is well on its way in doing so: The Group has now been ranked a world leader in climate protection by non-profit organisation CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project).

For the first time thyssenkrupp is included in the organisation’s global 'Climate A List', which comprises less than 200 companies. The Group also counts among the best companies in the “Germany, Austria and Switzerland” region for the fifth time in succession since 2012.

Several thousand companies worldwide took part in the ranking, which CDP conducts on behalf of more than 800 investors with assets worth US$100 trillion. The organisation holds the world’s largest collection of company-related climate data.

Thomas Fußhöller, head of Sustainability at thyssenkrupp, says “reducing emissions in our processes and through our products is strategically important to us. So we are proud to be among the world’s leading companies in terms of climate protection. It sends an important signal to our investors and customers.”

CDP’s ranking recognises thyssenkrupp’s consistently high level of transparency and performance in terms of climate protection in recent years. One medium-term company target is to improve energy efficiency by around 3.5 terawatt hours by 2020. This is more than three large offshore wind parks deliver in a year and equivalent to around 1.3 million t of CO2. Emissions of almost 1 million tons have already been avoided.

Sustainability is an integral part of thyssenkrupp’s business model and climate protection is one of the company’s strategic objectives. This is also reflected in the fact that the achievement of sustainability targets influences board compensation.

Innovation strategy and climate protection are also closely linked. Together with customers thyssenkrupp is developing products that conserve energy and resources. For the cement industry, for example, the Group offers a range of new technologies helping to cut CO2 emissions from cement production by up to 40%. Also, the company has launched the Carbon2Chem project to convert industrial emissions into valuable chemicals using renewable energies.
