Lafarge wins health and safety awards in the UK

Lafarge Cement (UK) collected five accolades at the prestigious MPA Health and Safety Best Practice Awards 2010.

The Mineral Products Association (MPA) is the UK’s national trade association for the aggregates, asphalt, cement, concrete, lime, mortar and silica sand industries.  Held in association with the Institute of Quarrying (IoQ) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology, its annual ceremony recognises and showcases outstanding examples of best practice and innovation in health and safety as part of MPA’s members’ drive to achieve Zero Harm. 

Lafarge’s ongoing commitment to industry-leading occupational health and safety was recognised with a collection of awards and commendations spanning its business operations.

In the MPA Trophy for Leadership, Lafarge Cement was awarded the top prize for its company wide Clean, Green and Injury Free housekeeping initiative. In addition it was also commended in the same category with a Certificate of Merit for Cauldon Works and its HazOp risk assessment tool.

Lafarge Cement also collected the runner-up prize in the MPA Trophy for Engineering Initiatives for its packer reel support system at the West Thurrock Marine Terminal as well as another Certificate of Merit for Aberthaw Works. This time it was commended for its initiative to prevent hazardous working in a preheater tower. To round off the day, Dai Morgan, Production Manager at Lafarge Cement’s Aberthaw Works was presented with an award in special recognition of an individual’s outstanding contribution to safety.
