Akaki Chkhaidze, Sales and Marketing Director at HeidelbergCement Caucasus, recently gave an interview to The Financial, a Georgian newspaper. In the interview, Chkhaidze discussed what makes HeidelbergCement so successful in the Georgian market, the company’s emphasis on environmental issues and its commitment to social projects. Some highlights are included below, or the full interview can be read here.

HeidelbergCement has repeatedly been named a favourite brand in the category of construction materials at the Golden Brand Awards Ceremony in Georgia, and now expects also to be recognised for its contribution to promoting a healthy lifestyle by organising marathons. “The Tbilisi Marathon, which was held on 28 October, 2012, was the first large scale marathon to be held in Georgia,” Chkhadize explains. “This year it will be held for the second time….It is a charity event, as (the) registration fee, doubled by us, will be transferred to foundation “Iavnana”.” The theme of the event is ‘Run for Health– Run for Charity’.

As for environmental issues, HeidelbergCement is pursuing a couple of angles: the installation of new fabric filters, the modernisation of its plants, the Quarry Life Award programme and the ‘Public-Private-Partnership Project’, which ran for three years ending in 2012. “This project was promoting biodiversity through the development and implementation of different re-cultivation models in all the mining sites of HeidelbergCement in Georgia. In addition, this project aimed to promote the share of experience on modern re-cultivation/renaturation practice with a variety of stakeholders (local community, authorities, universities etc). The project was completed successfully with the support of HeidelbergCement, German CIZ (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) and BMZ (Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development). Within the framework of PPP an action plan was developed to support biodiversity and rehabilitate the quarries.”

Chkhaidze also explains that when HeidelbergCement entered the Georgian market in 2006, it took the responsibility of bringing the existing plants into compliance with environmental norms. “More than €12 million was invested for the purpose of dedusting with the installation of new fabric filters in the Kaspi and Rustavi plants.” The company has an effective supply network through plants in Georgia, Turkey, Russia and Kazakhstan and supplies markets near the Black and Caspian Seas where rapid growth is expected thanks to the wealth of oil and gas in the region. “Accordingly,” Chkhaidze says, “HeidelbergCement’s strategic decision is to invest in building a new plant in Kaspi. So the company will expand its production volume and increase export to Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia.” The company has also opened a new concrete plant in Khelvachauri with a capacity of 100 m3/hour to meet demand from ongoing construction projects in the Adjara region.
