In August 2013, Katherine Guenioui visited the Cemex Tilbury grinding plant, located on the River Thames 25 km from central London. The plant opened in July 2009 and is designed to produce CEM 1, CEM 2 and CEM 3 with a total capacity of 1.2 million tpa.
The heart of the plant is a Loesche 46 2+2 vertical roller mill, which was the first vertical mill in the UK cement industry. The mill runs at around 115 tph and energy efficiency has been improved to 29.3 kWh/t. Across the plant, measures have been taken to increase efficiency, reduce emissions and bring down costs.
A full plant tour is included in the December 2013 issue, which subscribers can access by signing in here. The following video from Cemex archives introduces the plant, which boosted the company’s UK capacity by 20% when it was inaugurated in 2009.
