New cement capacity under construction in Uzbekistan
Having signed an intitial agreement in March this year, Uzbekneftegaz and Uzstroymateriali, Uzbekistan, are planning to set up a joint venture cement plant with the Omani Investment Fund in the Surkhandarya region in south Uzbekistan.
The plant will have a capacity of 1.7 million tpa and the construction venture will require an investment of US$ 200 – 250 million. Work is due to commence next year and should be completed in 2014.
There are also plans to construct two further plants in the Surkhandarya region with capacities of 1 million and 1.7 million tpa, a 2 million tpa plant in Jizzakh, two 1.5 million tpa plants in Kashkadarya and Karakalpakstan, and an 800 000 tpa plant in Tashkent. According to JSC Uzstroymateriali, an investment of US$ 290 million has been made in three plants that are currently under construction in the country with a combined capacity of 2.36 million t. Uzbekistan currently operates six cement plants with a total capacity of 7 million t.
