Following increased demand for its more sustainable product lines, global building materials supplier Cemex has seen sales of its cement which provides the greatest reduction in CO2 emissions increase to now account for more than 20% of sales volumes across Europe.

Significant percentage of Cemex’s European cement sales offer 55% reduction in CO2 emissions

Advances in product design and manufacturing technology, including the widescale use of hydrogen in our production process, has enabled this new high-performance cement, which gives a reduction in CO2 emissions of more than 55% compared to a traditional Type I OPC cement*.

Additionally, the CO2 saving achieved when using this cement means it is already compliant with Fit for 55, the EU’s target of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, and Cemex’s corresponding regional goal for its operations.

This cement has now been categorised as Vertua® Supreme, the latest addition to Cemex’s Vertua lower carbon cement range.

Graham Russell, Commercial Vice President for Cemex Europe, commented: “We are seeing high cut-through for our more sustainable products across the region, with particularly increased demand for our lower carbon cement range. We are therefore proud to expand this portfolio further with the introduction of Vertua Supreme, perfect for customers keen to achieve top tier CO2 emission savings of more than 55%.

“Our Vertua lower carbon cements demonstrate our focus on differentiation, continuous improvement and the quest for excellence as we strive to meet our global goal of operating as a net-zero company by 2050. The validation of this goal through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for alignment under their 1.5°C scenario, the most ambitious pathway defined for the industry, further underlines our commitment to more sustainable operations, products and solutions.”

Cemex’s dedicated climate action strategy, Future in Action, identifies the development and introduction of innovative lower carbon products and solutions as an integral part of its road map to carbon neutrality. The European business has already made strong progress towards the global target, with a milestone 41% reduction** in CO2 emissions achieved in 2022. Cemex expects to exceed its 2030 aspiration of hitting a 55% CO2 reduction in its European operations.

*Basis of calculation: GCCA standard value for cement clinker emissions (global weighted average of direct Net emissions of cement clinker) from Getting the Number Right (GNR) in 2000: 862 kg CO2/t cement clinker. Reference value Cement (CEM I with 95% cement clinker content): 822 kg CO2/t cement.
