Hope Works welcomes more than 2000 people to open day

The Hope cement plant, operated by Hope Construction Materials, celebrated its 85th birthday on 6th September with an open day attended by more than 2000 people.

The 1.5 million tpa plant – the largest cement manufacturing operation in the UK – opened its doors to the local community, offering plant tours and family fun for all. The timing of the event was particularly serendipitous, as experts announced that August was a boom month for the growth of UK construction.

Hope Construction Materials hosted visitors of all ages from the local area and further afield, who came – in spite of the wet weather – to get a closer look at the quarry and works and to experience a unique steam train ride up and down the branchline that connects the Works with the railway mainline. Also popular on the day were a range of fun activities including stilt walkers, face painting and donkey rides for the younger visitors; and works and quarry tours, a historical exhibition and music for everyone else.

Hope Construction Materials’ Industrial Director, Ashley Bryan says:  “We were not lucky with the weather but despite this, the event was a big success and we are delighted that so many people came along to help celebrate this milestone at Hope Works.  We host visits from a wide range of organisations throughout the year (600 people came here last year), but it was great to open our doors informally for one day and welcome so many people on site. It was also our first major event at Hope Works since we became part of Hope Construction Materials – a company which we are proud to say takes its name from this Works and its established location in the Hope Valley.

“We had lots of very positive feedback from visitors who were fascinated to learn more about quarrying and how cement is made.  Thanks to all those people who made the event so successful – both organisers and visitors.”
