World Cement,
Cemex UK has kicked off its second annual Pedometer Challenge. On 4th May, 800 colleagues in 88 teams began their walking challenge, hoping to beat last year’s achievement of 210 million steps across 760 colleagues.
Andy Taylor, Health and Safety Director comments: “Last year was a tremendous achievement. For some colleagues the Pedometer challenge has changed their lives. Simon Spelman in Logistics not only lost weight and gave up smoking but got all his family walking.”
“Our industry has an ageing workforce with the average age in the late 40s. Many of our colleagues work in a potentially hazardous environment so quite rightly, their safety is paramount; however, the ‘health’ in ‘health and safety’ mustn’t be forgotten.”
Each colleague has been given a pedometer and will report their steps to their team leaders on a weekly basis. As well as improving their health, the challenge will also raise money for charity.
