New UK construction and demolition recycling plant

World Cement,

Construction waste recycling

UK-based Sheehan Haulage & Plant Hire has installed a new construction and demolition recycling plant. The facility was commissioned in June 2012 by CDE Global, an international supplier of washing equipment for quarries and mines. The plant, which was more than five years in the planning, is located on the outskirts of Oxfordshire.

The facility has the capability to handle 100 000 tpa of construction and demolition waste and turn it into high value construction aggregates, recycled sands and sub soil. Building rubble, excavation and demolition material can be processed into a range of clean aggregates and shingles of 3.3 mm, 6 mm, 10 mm and 40 mm grades, washed building sand, fine grade soil and vibro piling material. Erroneous materials are removed and sent on for further recycling, while water is extracted and used as part of the washing process. The waste will come from Sheehan’s own projects as a public works and civil engineering contractor, as well as from as far afield as Greater London. The materials can be used in future construction projects – in fact 50% of it is currently reused by Sheehan.

Processing waste materials

The waste material is initially loaded into a CDE Global feed hopper. Ferrous material is removed via an overband magnet and further pre-screening removes other erroneous materials. Sand particles are liberated through an initial rinsing in an AggmaxTM unit and then sent on to an EvowashTM for the first washing phase. Larger pre-screened material is then sent to the Rotomax™ logwasher for scrubbing and material is discharged to a dewatering screen, with further liberated sand particles recovered for final aggregate rinsing.

The screened and washed aggregate is then discharged to the triple deck Prograde™ that grades aggregates into 5-10mm / 10-20mm / 20-40mm / +40mm material. Waste water is re-cycled and filtered through the Aquacycle™ thickener with silt particles being removed and the waste sludge sent to a concrete buffer tank. Further filtering creates a filter cake of approximately 90% dry solids content and all residual water is recycled back to the washing plant.

See for yourself

Sheehan Haulage & Plant Hire is inviting those interested in the recycling of construction and demolition materials to come and see a full demonstration of the new plant at Dix Pit, Oxfordshire, from 11 - 14 September. The site will be open from 9.30am – 4pm, with car parking available on site. Visitors are urged to bring PPE with them on the day. A preview video of the Open Days is available here.

The site address is: Sheehan Haulage & Plant Hire, Dix Pit, Lynch Hill, Stanton Harcourt, OX29 5BB.
