Holcim seeking tenders for New Zealand plant

Holcim is currently refining the exact cost of building a second plant in New Zealand’s South Island, to replace its ageing Westport plant. Holcim New Zealand are planning to build the new plant near Oamaru; the company received planning permission to build the 880 000 tpa capacity in August 2009. In 2008 the project was priced at US$ 362 million, including the new port infrastructure and ships.

It is seeking construction tenders before making a final investment proposal.

“Until now we’ve only had higher level costing estimates,” said Ken Cowie Holcim New Zealand’s capital project’s manager. “Reviewing mechanical, electrical and civil aspects of the plant construction will give us a more accurate capital cost. These costings will be further refined through the tendering process.”

The company plans to wait until costs have been refined before making a final investment proposal to its parent company in Switzerland.
