Holcim plans new cement plant in Indonesia

PT Holcim Indonesia has announced plans to invest between US$ 400 million and 500 million in a project to construct a cement plant at Tuban, East Java. The facility will have a capacity of 1.6 million t, and is presently awaiting approval from Holcim Group, Switzerland – the controlling shareholder of the facility. At present, Holcim operates a production capacity of 8.3 million tpa

Meanwhile, Holcim Group companies ACC and Ambuja Cement faired differently over the first quarter of 2010 – ACC posted a drop in net profit and output, while Ambuja Cement recorded growth over the period. ACC net profit dropped 2% compared to last year, falling to Rs. 393 crore. Ambuja Cement, however, took advantage of healthy demand in the East and West to increase profit by 38%, to Rs. 462 crore. A. L. Kapur, Managing Director, remarked how demand grew by some 10% over the first quarter period: ‘the east and west regions were particularly strong while demand softened to an extent in the South and North. The export markets remained relatively depressed.’
