Communication awards

Holcim Philippines won three awards from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) at the Philippine Quill 2013. The company’s 2012 Annual Report, “Our Life’s Journey”, which was packaged according to an innovative design akin to a worker’s journal, won in the Publication Design category. Holcim Philippines’ Business Briefings, quarterly town hall meetings for employees to discuss company performance, were recognised in the Employee Communications category, while its internal newsletters won an award in the Publications category.

“Our company believes that engaging both internal and external stakeholders is important to business success. Open and honest communication lines are crucial to strengthening engagement, and we are honoured that the IABC recognises our initiatives to contribute to this objective,” Beng Prado, Holcim Philippines Vice President for Communications, commented.

Ecological performance

In October, Holcim Philippines was recognised for its environmental performance at the 39th Philippine Business Conference and Expo. While at the event, the cement producer received the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) Excellence in Economy and Ecology Award (E3) for large enterprises. The E3 Award is given to companies that demonstrate an innovative and outstanding environmental performance, implementing measures that reduce environmental impact whilst improving business performance. Quarry rehabilitation projects, energy efficiency programmes and the co-processing of solid and industrial waste are among Holcim Philippines’ environmental achievements. As of December 2012, the company had planted trees on more than 1400 ha. of land, and it has reduced its CO2 emissions/t of cement by 11.6% from 1990 levels by lowering its use of traditional fuels.

“We are very honored for getting this recognition. This shows that businesses are not just helping in growing the economy, but are also striving to become better stewards of the environment. This will further motivate us to pursue our vision to help build the foundation for society’s future through sustainable mining and manufacturing practices,” said Holcim Philippines Chief Executive Officer Ed Sahagun.
