Beijing issues first ever 'red alert' on air pollution

World Cement previously reported that as Beijing air quality reached a severe level, the city ordered 2100 companies to suspend production and construction sites to stop work in a bid to tackle the problem. The article can be found here.
Reuters has now reported that China's capital issued its first ever ‘red alert’ for pollution on 7 December.
The Beijing city government ordered all outdoor construction work to stop on red alert days. The announcement was made via an online statement.
The notice, issued after days of heavy smog last week, also puts traffic restrictions on certain types of vehicles in the city of 22.5 million people.
"Construction waste, excavation transport vehicles, cement trucks, gravel transport vehicles and other large-scale vehicles are prohibited from driving on roads," authorities announced in the statement.
