As world leaders met yesterday in Paris to discuss plans to tackle climate change, Beijing saw the worst air quality readings so far this year and ordered 2100 companies to suspend production and construction sites to stop work in a bid to tackle the problem.

The order has been supervised by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, which has found that some companies – including cement companies – continued to operate in spite of the restriction. Further monitoring will be carried out today.

Beijing was not alone. The air quality index reached a severe level in several other cities, too, with the concentration of PM2.5 at 945 micrograms per cubic metre in some monitoring stations. The national standard is 75 micrograms per cubic metre.
