Josh Frydenberg, Federal Environment and Energy Minister in Australia, unveiled a state-of-the-art resource recovery facility in July. Located in Wetherill Park in Sydney, the Process Engineered Fuel (PEF) plant is a multi-million dollar investment by ResourceCo and Cleanaway.

The new plant aims to redirect 50 000 truckloads of waste away from landfill to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, such as coal and gas. PEF substitutes fossil fuels in cement production in both domestic and offshore markets.

“It will replace over 100 000 tpy of coal usage alone and will take the equivalent of 20 000 cars annually off the road in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, said Ben Sawley, CEO of Sustainable Energy at ResourceCo. “We are committed to playing a key role in Australia’s future sustainable energy mix, by reducing waste and lowering carbon emissions through the production of a commercially viable sustainable energy product.”

The plant is licensed to receive 250 000 tpy of dry commercial, industrial, mixed construction, and demolition waste. Commodities such as metal, clean timber, and inert materials will be recovered and the balance converted into PEF. Cleanaway will help to drive volume to the facility with its customer base and waste supply, thus recovering more waste from landfill.

PEF will predominantly supply Boral, Australia’s largest construction materials company, with a coal-substitute for its Berrima cement kiln. Any remaining material will be exported to ResourceCo’s Asian business.

“Investment in resource recovery and innovative waste to energy solutions is essential to making a sustainable future possible, and one of the ways we are delivering on our Footprint 2025 strategy,” said Vik Bansal, Chief Executive Officer of Cleanaway.

ResourceCo is a leading environmental services company in Australia, operating in 22 locations across Australia and Southeast Asia. Cleanaway is Australia’s leading total waste management, industrial, and environmental services company. Listed as a top 100 company on the ASX, Cleanaway has a network of over 250 locations around Australia.
