Lafarge Africa CEO Guillaume Roux has told press that the company lost around N2.5 billion during the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast of Nigeria between November 2014 and April 2015. In spite of what he referred to as ‘difficulties’, the company is committed to the region and is investing N100 billion in expanding its business there. Lafarge Africa is partnering with the federal government to help rebuild the region, where Ashaka Cement has been active for more than 40 years.
Meanwhile, Lafarge Africa has also emphasised its commitment to sustainable development and affordable housing in various schemes that aim to tackle the housing deficit in Nigeria, which is estimated at 17 million. Its various programmes include a countrywide N1.3 billion low-cost housing scheme, a partnership with the Federal Government on the construction of affordable housing in Abuja and the construction of housing units for 1000 villagers in Ogun state. To date, more than 2000 homes have been completed and delivered to the owners.
