Ashaka Cement invests NGN151 million in Nigerian communities

World Cement,
Nigerian cement manufacturer Ashaka Cement Company, a subsidiary of Lafarge International, has invested approximately NGN151.3 million on projects in its host communities.
Leornad Palka, Managing Director of Ashaka Cement, local press in Gombe that the NGN151.3 million in funding was invested from 2011 to 2013. The money was spent, among other things, on the construction of classrooms, drilling of hand pumps and the electrification of a number of villages. The company additionally purchased a set of electricity generators for some district heads and ultrasound machines for the hospital in Bajoga.
The funding represents part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme. According to Palka, the host communities had created a favourable working atmosphere for the company; therefore, Ashaka Cement felt a need to perform its corporate social responsibility. In addition to the investments mentioned above, the company trained over 200 applicants from the host communities in various skills.
