The Qalaa Holdings Scholarship Foundation (QHSF), Egypt’s largest private-sector funded scholarship program, proudly announced the names of its 10th class of scholarship recipients. The 2016-2017 class of scholars includes 13 students representing 6 Egyptian governorates and brings the Foundation’s total number of scholarships awarded up to 151.

QHSF’s 10th annual class of scholarship recipients was announced at a special gala event at the Salah El Din Citadel attended by Egyptian and foreign dignitaries including the Egyptian Minister of Social Solidarity, Mrs. Ghada Waly.

Mrs. Waly praised the work of the Foundation and encouraged Qalaa Holdings to continue with their efforts in funding education through QHSF and developing the capabilities of Egypt’s youth through the training and knowledge transfer initiatives that are being undertaken by the company and its subsidiaries.

The 13 students who were awarded scholarships this year will be pursuing Masters degrees in cutting edge fields including Energy Law, Molecular Biotechnology, Subsea Engineering and Endovascular Neurosurgery among others at universities in the U.S., the UK, Italy, and the Netherlands. The scholars represent the governorates of Cairo, Giza, (Banha) Qaliubiya, (Shebin El Koum) Menoufiya, (Tanta) Gharbeya, and Alexandria.

Qalaa Holdings has always believed that the private sector should lead by example to help bring about more sustainable and inclusive growth in Egypt and the wider region. Early on the company moved beyond the traditional concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and charitable donations to incorporate the social dimension as part of their core activities by pursuing the types of responsible or impact investments that will foster inclusive growth. Even on the level of Qalaa’s subsidiary companies, community development projects have focused on education on all levels including technical and vocational training as well as higher education.

This year an additional scholarship was also awarded personally by Qalaa Chairman and Founder Ahmed Heikal and his wife May to an Egyptian student to attend New York University (NYU). The first recipient of the annual May and Ahmed Heikal NYU Scholarship is, Ibrahim Shehata, who will be pursuing a graduate degree in Law.

Recipients of Qalaa Holdings’ Scholarships have attended top international institutions including Harvard, Stanford, Duke, Wharton, Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, Cornell, Tufts and Johns Hopkins in the United States; Oxford, Cambridge, SOAS, University College London, Imperial College London and the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom; Lund University in Sweden; University of Heidelberg in Germany; Science Po in France, University of Helsinki in Finland; Ghent University in Belgium; and ESADE Business School in Spain, among other top universities and institutes.
