Limak Cement Group is joining the African ‘cement rush’ and partnering with local company Afrikbat to invest in a US$50 million cement grinding and packaging plant. A signing ceremony has taken place in Ankara to seal the deal.

The new plant will be located in Abidjan, the country’s former capital and its biggest city. It will have the capacity to grind 1 million t of cement and to produce 1 million m3 of ready-mixed concrete.

Limak Holding Board Chairman, Nihat Özdemir, said: “With this facility, we will be achieving the first of our targets we set for being an important actor in the African market.” Özdemir indicated that they are planning to expand the facility by added that future plans for the site include building a “Block Production Facility and Prefabricated Products Factory”. As well as serving the local market, products will also be exported to other African countries.

The foundations for the new plant will be laid in December of this year, with production due to start at the facility in October 2015.
