Derba Cement plans two new plants in Ethiopia

According to local reports, Mohammed Al-Amoudi, founder and owner of MIDROC, is planning to build two more cement plants in Ethiopia. The Saudi businessman plans to inject millions into the plants due to a favourable investment environment and continuing improvements in the business climate in the country. Derba Group, a combination of three of Al-Amoudi’s Ethiopian companies, plans to invest around US$3.4 billion in Ethiopia over the next five years.
The two new plants will add to Derba MIDROC Cement’s existing US$351 million greenfield facility in the country, which opened in December 2011. The existing plant is based in the Mugar valley, some 70 km from Addis Ababa, and produces ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and Portland pozzolana cement (PPC). Cement production capacity at the plant is 2.5 million tpa and clinker production capacity is approximately 5600 tpd. Around 5500 engineers, technicians and labourers were employed during its construction.
