Carbon sequestration company expands
CarbonCure, a company working on carbon sequestration in the concrete products industry, has announced new staff and new facilities to push its business forward. Kavin Cail, previously of Lafarge North America, has joined CarbonCure as Chief Technology Officer to lead the company’s R&D activities. Cail, who has been working in the industry for more than 30 years, will help the company in their endeavour to commercialise their technology, which is described as ‘a unique method of repurposing waste CO2 to make concrete less carbon-intensive’.
“I’ve been in the cement and concrete industry a long time, and there’s an inherent need to reduce the industry CO2 footprint”, says Cail, who is also active in codes and standards work and has served on the board of directors for the Canada Green Building Council and the Strategic Development Council of the American Concrete Institute. “CarbonCure’s novel industry approach stands to transform the concrete sector by providing a cost effective method to consume a harmful greenhouse gas, and make better concrete products.”
Nova Scotia-based CarbonCure has also announced a move to larger facilities in Dartmouth, which gives the company greater research and development facilities. There are further plans to bring in additional technical staff and create new partnerships with industry and academia as the company moves to roll out its clean technology across North America.
CarbonCure CEO Robert Niven spoke of the new developments as being important to the company’s end goal of making carbon negative concrete: ‘concrete that actually sequesters more carbon than it emits’. The company has already signed a licensing agreement with fellow Canadian Atlas Block, a masonry manufacturer, and is also working with Basalite Concrete Products, California, and Shaw Group, Nova Scotia.
