Cement plants in Arizona face new pollution controls

US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing new pollution controls in Arizona to reduce smog and improve air quality in the state’s national parks and wilderness areas. Emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides would be reduced by 30 000 pa and 3100 tpa, respectively, under the new proposal. The pollution controls would specifically be applied to six industrial facilities in Arizona, including a CalPortland Cement Co. plant near Tuscon and Phoenix Cement Co.’s plant in Clarkdale.
The EPA will accept comments from the companies affected by the proposed measures and a decision is expected by 27 June. Public hearings will be held on 25 and 26 February. Further information is available in the fact sheet, which does not mention the Portland Cement NESHAP coming into force in September 2015. Presumably these new pollution controls would be in addition to existing regulations.
