US cement shipments totalled 8.1 million t in May

The USGS has released its monthly data on the shipments of cement to final customers and the production of clinker in the US from January 2013 through May 2014.

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico in May 2014 were 8.1 million t, up by approximately 6% from the level recorded in May 2013. Shipments for the year through May reached 31.2 million t, a 6% y/y increase from the same period in 2013. The leading Portland cement-producing states in May were Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Michigan (in descending order), and these accounted for about 44% of the total output. The leading consuming states were Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois (in descending order), which received about 37% of the May total shipments.

Clinker production totalled 7.14 million t in May 2014, increasing by 6% from the output recorded in May 2013 (table 4). Production for the year through May totaled 27.2 million t, up by about 4%. The leading clinker-producing states in May were Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Pennsylvania (in descending order), and these accounted for about 47% of total output for the month.

Masonry cement shipments in May 2014 stood at 206 000 t, a 4% increase compared to May 2013. Shipments for the year through May totalled 870 000 t, up by about 6%. The leading masonry cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia, and these received about 50% of May’s total shipments.
