Cemex, S.A.B. de C.V. joins Panama in the celebration of the inauguration of the Panama Canal expansion, as the main cement supplier for this globally impactful project.
Cemex supplied close to a million tons of especially developed cement for the Canal expansion—considered the most important infrastructure project in the last 100 years.
In 2008, the company invested over US$300 million to triple its production capacity in Panama to meet the country’s growing demand. Together with its technical capacity and international experience, this enabled Cemex to supply the cement for this project. To guarantee supply, Cemex Panama dedicated a production line exclusively for the Panama Canal expansion project.
“Cemex congratulates the Government, the Panama Canal Authorities, and especially the Panamanian people for the key role they played in this iconic project, which will change the dynamics of global trade and economy,” said Fernando A. Gonzalez, CEO of Cemex. “Our ability to meet the design, supply, and logistics requirements of our clients is a priority for us. We are proud to have fulfilled the demands of this mega-infrastructure.”
Cemex Panama and CEMEX Research Group AG designed the cement especially for this project. Developed with durable and low heat hydration properties, this innovative cement enabled fast construction by facilitating massive pouring. It is also highly resistant to chemical sulfates that attack submarine structures.
For five years, Cemex provided a constant flow of building materials—24 hours a day, seven days a week—to facilitate the construction of the third set of locks for the Canal.
Cemex’s cement and ready-mix technology centres are part of the R&D collaboration network, headed by Cemex Research Group AG in Switzerland.
