Cemex social initiative will equip 100 000 homes with ecological concrete cookstoves

At the Cookstoves Future Summit in New York City, USA, construction materials producer Cemex announced that it had begun selling and installing 100 000 ecological concrete cookstoves. These concrete cookstoves provide an efficient alternative to open fires and rudimentary cookstoves. In addition to reducing the use of wood as fuel by up to 75%, thus providing financial savings, the ecological cookstoves help to lower CO₂ emissions whilst providing health and safety advantages by reducing the risk of burns and respiratory diseases. The 100 000 concrete cookstoves are expected to benefit around 0.5 million people in Mexico and Guatemala.

Cemex has invested some US$2 million in the social initiative, which forms part of its commitment to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. The Alliance was launched by Hilary Clinton in 2010 with the aim of equipping 100 million homes worldwide with clean cookstoves by 2020.
