Cemex scores cement goal at the 2014 FIFA World Cup
Cemex provided around 28 000 t of its specialty high quality cement for the construction of the World Cup host stadium Arena de Amazonia, Manaus. The stadium was the venue for last night’s Group E game, which saw Switzerland beat Honduras 3-0 to proceed to the next stage of the competition.
Working in close collaboration with construction company Andrade Gutierrez S.A., Cemex supplied the cement via its marine terminal in Manaus, which is located some 20 km from the arena. The 170 000 m2 stadium, which was designed by Von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, is one of the first stadiums in the world to achieve certification under the US Green Building Council’s LEED scheme. Its seats are painted the colours of Amazon fruit, such as bananas, mangoes, pineapples and papayas.
“Cemex is proud to provide its customers with high quality building materials and best-in-class customer service for beautiful and innovative large scale projects around the world. With people from more than 200 countries watching, we welcomed the opportunity to help Manaus, the greatest city in the Amazon, to successfully present the 2014 FIFA World Cup to millions of fans worldwide,” commented Fernando A. Gonzalez, Cemex’s Chief Executive Officer.
