World Cement,
- In 2025, Holcim Mexico achieved a 58% reduction in freshwater withdrawal across its operations compared to 2020.
- Holcim Mexico will invest approximately US$20.6 million by 2027 in infrastructure, technology, and water resilience projects.
- Currently, 71% of its plants in Mexico incorporate recycled or non-conventional water into their processes.

With the goal of contributing to the progress of the communities where it operates, Holcim Mexico will strengthen its comprehensive water management strategy in the country through an investment of US$20.6 million by 2027 to expand its infrastructure and technology for water stewardship. These efforts reflect Holcim Mexico’s commitment to achieving its global target of reducing freshwater withdrawal by up to 33% across its operations by 2030.
To date, Holcim Mexico has achieved a consolidated 58% reduction in freshwater extraction, driven by increased use of treated wastewater and process optimisation through recirculation technologies and predictive maintenance, currently implemented in 71% of its plants. Additionally, the company has introduced operational improvements and developed rainwater harvesting projects, community water infrastructure, environmental restoration in vulnerable areas near its operations, and nature-based solutions to support watershed recharge.
Beyond operational efficiency, Holcim Mexico is also driving sector transformation through high-value solutions that reduce water consumption in construction processes. Through these innovations, the company has enabled a potential saving of 232 million litres of water nationwide, equivalent to approximately 93 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Among these innovations is its self-curing concrete technology, I-dracreto, which eliminates the need for post-placement curing, saving approximately 70 litres of water per square meter. Additionally, Holcim Mexico has developed permeable systems that enhance infiltration and natural aquifer recharge. These solutions are part of a sustainable construction strategy aligned with international standards and globally validated water management targets.
“Our vision has evolved: it is no longer enough to reduce consumption. We are transforming our operational model into a circular water economy ecosystem, where systematic reuse and regeneration are key to efficiency. By closing water cycles in our processes and projects, we not only mitigate risks but also strengthen the resilience of shared watersheds. In a context where water availability defines project viability, the construction industry must lead the transition toward water management that returns to the environment the same quality and vitality it receives,” said Ibette Sosa, Sustainability Manager at Holcim Mexico.
In line with this vision, Holcim Mexico is one of only three companies globally to have validated its Nature-Based Targets, a scientific framework that establishes rigorous goals for operating within planetary boundaries. This commitment is reflected in tangible results; for example, in the Moctezuma basin, the company set a target to reduce freshwater extraction by 39%, which it has already surpassed, achieving a 47% reduction.
These efforts respond to the urgent need to modernise water infrastructure and adopt more efficient management models. According to Mexico’s National Water Commission (CONAGUA), over 40% of the country is experiencing some level of drought, and approximately 52.5% of the urban population has regular access to potable water, according to INEGI data.
With a nationwide presence, Holcim Mexico recognises that responsible water management is key to competitiveness and social well-being. The company will continue strengthening its water strategy with a long-term vision, reaffirming its commitment to building progress for people and the planet.
