Cemex, S.A.B. de C.V has announced that The Wild Sheep Foundation granted the company its Special Conservation Award in recognition of the initiatives undertaken by Cemex to protect the desert bighorn sheep in North America.

Cemex was commended for its outstanding contributions to desert bighorn sheep repatriation, conservation, and enhanced population in the Mexican state of Coahuila. As a part of Cemex’s El Carmen Conservation Program, the Desert Bighorn Sheep Restoration Program aims to help restore desert bighorn sheep populations within their former natural range in North America. To this end, Cemex works with government agencies, private landowners, conservation NGOs, universities, and others to address this challenge.

“We are honoured to receive this recognition, which reinforces our commitment to conserve and protect the extraordinary biodiversity of our planet,” said Vicente Saiso, Director of Sustainability for Cemex. “We will continue to work to ensure a bright future for the return of the desert bighorn sheep to the wild.”

The Wild Sheep Foundation, formerly the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep, is the premier advocate for the habitat and conservation of wild sheep and other mountain wildlife. Since its formation in 1977, The Wild Sheep Foundation, along with its chapters and affiliates working with federal, state, provincial, and industry partners like Cemex, has tripled bighorn sheep populations in North America. At present, the Foundation, its chapters, affiliates, and agency partners are also working together to ensure that bighorn sheep thrive in their northern mountain realms for generations to enjoy.

El Carmen Conservation Program celebrates 15 years of work conserving the unique biodiversity of the border region within the states of Coahuila, Mexico, and Texas, US, for present and future generations to enjoy.
