Mineral Industry Surveys second quarter gypsum results

Producers mined 2.72 million t of gypsum during the second quarter of 2015.
This figure was 3% less than that of the first quarter of 2015 and 7% less than that of the second quarter of 2014. Synthetic gypsum used was 2.3 t in the second quarter of 2015, which was 16% more than that of the first quarter of 2015 and 7% more than that of the second quarter of 2014. During the second quarter of 2015, synthetic gypsum accounted for 38% of the 6.11 t total supply of gypsum in the United States.
Sales of uncalcined gypsum in the second quarter of 2015, mainly for portland cement manufacture and for agricultural uses, were 505 000 t, which were 27% more than those of the first quarter of 2015 and 19% more than those of the second quarter of 2014.
The supply of calcined gypsum for the second quarter of 2015 was 3.93 Mt, which was 17% more than that of the first quarter of 2015 and 8% more than that of the second quarter of 2014. Sales of board products were 4.72 Mt, equivalent to approximately 526 million square meters, which were 17% more than those of the first quarter of 2015 and 4% more than those of the second quarter of 2014.
