New England Studios, a state-of-the art studio complex in Devens, MA, is using Lafarge North America’s NewCem slag cement to achieve its high-strength, long-term durability and sustainability goals. The complex includes four 18 000 ft2 connected sound stages with an attached 30 000 ft2, three-storey production support building, including dressing rooms. Adjacent to the studios are two 20 000 ft2 mill buildings, which house light and grip, production construction facilities, mechanical effects and set storage.

The design of the main studio included 120 concrete tilt-up walls that were cast on site for ease and speed of construction. Each wall is 56 ft tall, 20 ft wide and 10.5 in. thick. To meet the required noise coefficient soundproofing rating of 25, the studios also relied on 12 in. thick tilt-up concrete panels for the exterior and interior doors, as well as 3 in. of shotcrete for the roof system. J.G. MacLellan Concrete Co., the ready-mix producer for the project, supplied a total of 10 500 yd of concrete for the foundation, tilt-up walls and roof system of the studio complex.

All the concrete used in the project contained 30% NewCem slag cement and 70% Type II cement from Lafarge.
