Dominican Republic ramps up cement export volumes

World Cement,

According to ADOCEM, the association representing cement producers in the Dominican Republic, cement exports increased by 34.2% y/y in 1H12. Sales of cement to foreign markets rose from 524 000 t in January – June 2011 to 703 000 t in the same period this year.

The growth in export volumes has helped to minimise the impact of waning domestic demand. However, ADOCEM points out that when taking into account local demand and exports, 35% of the Dominican Republic’s cement capacity remains idle, a figure that equates to more than 6 million t.

The Dominican Republic exports around 35% of the cement it produces a year, making it the biggest cement exporter in the Caribbean. Its principal export markets include Haiti, Jamaica, Bermuda, Guyana and the Virgin Islands.
