US Cement Shipments Remain Flat

US Geological Survey preliminary estimates, just released, indicate that US cement shipments in June 2010 were 0.2% higher than in June 2009. This was the fourth successive month in which consumption was higher than in the same month in the previous year, after 45 months of continued decline between May 2006 and February 2010. However the rate of increase has slowed significantly from the 8.7% increase in April.

Among the larger states, shipments increased in June in South Carolina (+22%), Michigan (+16%), Florida (+9%), and Northern Texas (+5%). Conversely, they declined in Arizona (-9%), Southern California (-6%), Southern Texas (-6%), Northern California (-4%) and Georgia (-4%).

Cement shipments for the first six months of this year were 4.3% lower than in the same period in 2009. Among the larger states shipments declined in Northern California (-19%), Arizona (-15%), Georgia (-11%), Southern California (-11%), Florida (-5%), and Southern Texas (-5%), but they increased in South Carolina (+11%), Michigan (+7%) and Northern Texas (+2%).
