Titan America presents ecological project at the Wildlife Habitat Council’s Annual Symposium

Titan Florida LLC, a subsidiary of Titan America LLC, presented a case study at the Wildlife Habitat Council’s Annual Symposium celebrating corporate conservation.

Muhammad Khan, Environmental Manager at Titan Florida’s Pennsuco plant, spoke at the event, which took place at the Hilton Baltimore. The case study – ‘Titan Florida’s Ecological Restoration’ – discussed the plant’s work to combat an invasive plant species. In the 1940s, the Corps of Engineers planted melaleuca trees in and around the campus of what is today the Pennsuco plant. Although the plants were believed to be harmless at the time, the USDA declared that the plant was an invasive species in the 1990s. In order to prevent damage to native wildlife, the plant had to take action to remove the melaleuca trees from the site. Titan’s environmental staff worked with a local biologist over three years to remove the invasive species and replace it with native trees, such as gumbo limbo, live oak and red maple.

Some 50 acres of land was mitigated for the project, including an upland tree island that hosts native trees over an area of 3000 ft2. The campus is now home to birds such as the cattle egret, bald eagle, wood stork, white ibis and flamingo. In addition, a family of otters enjoys the nearby waterways.

“It was a hard fight to reverse the spread of the invasive species but the results are most gratifying,” noted Khan, who led the project.

In 2013, staff at Titan’s Pennsuco plant were applauded for their contribution to conservation education at the Wildlife Habitat Council’s 25th Annual Symposium. Six Titan America sites received Wildlife Habitat Council certification. The Roanoke and Pennsuco cement plants received certification for ‘Corporate Lands for Learning’. The company’s cement terminals in Virginia and North Carolina, and the Center Sand site in Clermont were certified under ‘Wildlife at Work’.
