The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) has created an infographic on PPE in the workplace – ‘PPE: The Basics’.

Safety milestones

Lafarge recently held a ‘Health and Safety Month’, during which its employees took part in a number of training activities and celebrated their safety achievements. In Spain, Lafarge’s Cementos Parrilla celebrated six years without accidents, the Villaluenga de la Sagra plant reached five years with a zero accident rate, and the Montcada i Reixac plant in Cataluña achieved two years accident free. Meanwhile, the Sagunto plant was granted entry into the Lafarge Group’s Excellence in Safety Club after 922 days without accidents.

OH&S awards

A number of awards ceremonies recognise health and safety efforts and achievements. In June, the British Safety Council launched its prestigious 2014 Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour awards, which celebrate exemplary management of health, safety and environmental risks by businesses around the world. In May 2014, all of Cemex UK’s business units – concrete, cement, aggregates, asphalt, building products, rail, logistics, marine and ash – were recognised for their safety efforts at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Occupational Health and Safety Awards.

Initiatives

The International Labor Organization (ILO) holds an annual ‘World Day for Safety and Health at Work’ to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases. This year it took place on 28 April 2014, with the theme of ‘Safety and health in the use of chemicals at work’. A number of associations and companies marked the date. For example, the RoSPA’s National Occupational Safety and Health Committee launched a new website about the history of occupational health and safety, covering 200 years of the UK’s industrial activity. Over in Kenya, Savannah Cement held an event at its Kitengela site, during which the company’s Managing Director, Ronald Ndegwa, confirmed that international benchmarks had been adopted to ensure occupational chemical safety standards.
