Flyash project for Cementos Biobio’s Antofagasta plant

Chile’s E-CL has signed a contract with Cementos Biobio for a new flyash project at the Antofagasta plant. The flyash from the electricity generating units at E-CL’s Central Térmica Andina (CTA) and Central Térmica Hornitos (CTH) thermal plants in Mejillones will be used as a replacement for natural pozzolana in the cement produced by Cementos Biobio at its Antofagasta site.

The contract announcement follows a long process of testing and development by both companies. Cementos Biobio estimates that it will consume some 70% of the flyash produced at the CTA and CTH plants.

The use of flyash also has an environmental benefit. If not incorporated into the cement manufacturing process by Cementos Biobio, the flyash would be deposited in authorised dumps.

Carlos Ferruz, Manager of Generation and Sites at E-CL, explained that: “with this initiative, a new use is given to the ash, incorporating this non-hazardous waste as raw material in so useful a product as cement. In addition, the loading, transportation and unloading is carried out without causing pollution.”

“Normally the ash resulting from electricity generation is taken to an authorised dump or ash pit but now it acquires a new use with this innovative project and is a real contribution to the environmental sustainability policies of both companies,” added Ferruz.
