FLSmidth inaugurates new service centre in Mexico

FLSmidth has opened a new service centre in Zacatecas, Mexico. The 12 400 m² site includes a 1000 m² warehouse and 250 m² for offices and training facilities, allowing space for future expansion. The business plan for the centre comprises three phases:

• Phase 1: field service, island service packages, training, exchange and stocking programmes, distribution.
• Phase 2: repair and/or upgrade of equipment.
• Phase 3: assembly of new equipment.

Phase 1 kicked off on 29 August 2014, when an inauguration ceremony took place at the centre. The event was attended by around 200 people, including local officials and representatives from around 80% of Mexico’s industrial mines. Instead of the customary ribbon cutting, FLSmidth managers planted a small evergreen tree, the Ligustrum Lucidum. This tree was chosen “because its qualities mirror those that FLSmidth looks for in a service center: it grows fast – both in sunshine and shadow – and its resilience enables it to thrive in ever-changing conditions,” explained Romy Gibbons, FLSmidth’s Global Supercenter Director.

FLSmidth has been present in the country since 1963, with employees celebrating the company’s 50^th anniversary in Mexico last year. FLSmidth has been selling its product on the Mexican market for even longer, with the first sales occurring in the 1930s. At present, more than 60% of the country’s cement plants incorporate FLSmidth design and equipment.

“In building up the service capabilities in Mexico, training and experience has been key as the team is now able to service a complete concentrator line with Spanish-speaking specialists,” said Richardt Fangel, FLSmidth Mexico Country Head. “We will also expand our equipment service packages with monthly visits by a field engineer for system inspection, process maintenance and spare-parts planning.”

“Zacatecas was a natural choice as a service center location because of its proximity to many of Mexico’s major mining projects,” added Fangel. “In all, nearly 70% of Mexico’s mining production takes place within a radius of 500 km from Zacatecas.”

The company’s service centres around the world have been established so that they are in close proximity to mining and cement operations. FLSmidth also runs service centres or Supercenters in Australia, South Africa, Chile, Peru and the US.
