On 13 October, Cemex announced that its Data Centre was awarded the Certified Energy Efficient Datacenter (CEEDA) Gold Certification. This is the highest recognition for energy efficient strategy in the datacenter industry. Cemex is the first company to have been awarded Gold Certification in the Americas, and is only the fifth to have been so recognised in the world.

The award came following a four-month assessment process, during which the company’s facilities and processes were evaluated both on-site and remotely. This ensured that Cemex’s Data Centre practices were consistent with best practices in energy efficiency, as well as specifications and metrics from such organisations and regulations as The Green Grid, Energy Star and the European Commission Code of Conduct for Data Centre Energy Efficiency.

The Gold level certification is the highest of three tiers, and certifies a holistic energy management programme, including automation, use of green energy and water, heat efficiency and reutilisation. The certification period covers two years. After this an updated assessment and renewal of the certification may be undertaken.

"We are very honoured to receive this certification, which recognises and reinforces our company’s commitment to sustainability,” said Roberto Chaverri, CEMEX Vice President of Information Technology. “At CEMEX, we perpetuate a philosophy of continuous improvement that is reflected in all of our business processes and operations."
