Cement in November 2009

The USGS has released its report that provides monthly data on the shipments of cement to final customers and the production of clinker in the US from January 2008 to November 2009. Data on the imports of cement and clinker for the current month are also provided.

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico for November 2009 were some 5.6 million t. This was 15% lower than shipments in November 2008. Year-to-date shipments were 66.3 million t, down by nearly 27% compared with those of the  same period in 2008. The leading producing States (Texas, California, Missouri, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, in descending order) shipped about 40% of the November total. The leading consuming States (Texas, California, Florida, Illinois, and Ohio, in descending order) received about 34% of November's total shipments.

Clinker production totaled 4.3 million t, about 35% lower than the production in November 2008. Year-to-date production was 54.1 million t, down by about 27% compared with that of the same period in 2008. The leading clinker-producing States (California, Texas, Missouri, Florida, and Pennsylvania, in descending order) produced about 48% of the November total.

Masonry cement shipments in November of about 158 000 t were nearly 17% lower than shipments for November 2008. Year-to-date shipments were 2.02 million t, down by about 30% compared with those of the same period in 2008. The leading consuming States in November, in descending order, were Florida, Texas, California, Georgia, and Tennessee, and these States received about 44% of November's total shipments.  

November 2009 imports of cement and clinker of about 658 000 t were down by nearly 13% from imports in November 2008. Year-to-date imports were 6.9 million t, down by almost 39% compared with those of the same period in 2008.
