Energy Department announces US$11 million for alternative fuel development

World Cement,

On 10 September the Energy Department announced its aim to help reduce US reliance on gasoline, diesel and oil imports by making US$11 million available to support development of innovative alternative technologies.

The funding opportunity focuses on two areas:

  • Medium and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Powertrain Electrification centres on research, development, and demonstration of electric-drive powertrain technologies for medium and heavy-duty vehicles that significantly reduce fuel consumption.
  • Heavy Duty Vehicle Dual Fuel Fleet Demonstration aims to show the performance and reliability of commercially-available dual fuel heavy-duty vehicles equipped with engines capable of operation using a mixture of diesel fuel and gaseous fuels – natural gas, propane- or natural gas-derived fuels such as dimethyl ether – and the associated emissions control systems.

The Energy Department National Laboratories will analyse the data collected from these activities in order to identify technology barriers and inform future efforts.
