According to the latest statistics from the USGS Mineral Industry Survey – Cement, shipments of blended and Portland cement increased by 9% y/y to 5.1 million t in the USA and Puerto Rico in December 2013. The top three cement-producing states during the month were Texas, California and Missouri. The biggest producers, in descending order, were Texas, California, Florida, Louisiana and Arizona. These states received approximately 45% of shipments in the final month of 2013.

Clinker production came in at 5.2 million t, some 5% higher than in the corresponding month in 2012. The top states for clinker production were Texas, California, Florida, Missouri and Alabama.

In December, masonry cement shipments reached 144 000 t, growing by 10% y/y. Together, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia received around 60% of masonry cement shipments.

Full-Year 2013

  • Shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico grew by 4% y/y to 82 million t.
  • Clinker production totalled 69.9 million t, representing an increase of 3% compared to 2012.
  • Shipments of masonry cement increased by nearly 8% to 2.1 million t.
  • In 2013, the value of cement sales came in at US$7.6 billion.
  • Some 70% of cement sales went to ready-mixed concrete producers, 11% to concrete product manufacturers, 9% to contractors, 4% to oil and gas well drillers, 4% to building materials dealers, with the remaining 2% going to other end-users.
  • The biggest cement-producing states were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Michigan. Together, these states accounted for 47% of cement production in 2013.
  • Cement was produced by 98 plants across 34 states, as well as at two plants in Puerto Rico.
  • No plant closures were announced last year and no new plant opened in 2013.
