Cemex announces Corporate Water Policy

World Cement,

Cemex has announced plans to implement a Corporate Water Policy, which will cover responsible water management initiatives on a global scale in addition to local water conservation and efficiency programmes. The policy covers regulatory compliance, commitment to site biodiversity and conservation of ecosystems through sustainable water management, as well as preventing water pollution. As part of the Corporate Water Policy, Cemex has renewed its pledge to increase water efficiency by managing consumption levels and using sustainable sources such as rainwater. Furthermore, the global building materials company will monitor, review, assess and disclose its water efficiency performance against measurable targets.

The policy has been developed together with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Cemex has been working with IUCN since 2010 in order to enhance its approach to water management. Since partnering with IUCN, Cemex has improved its water efficiency and introduced methodology to standardise water measurement.

“Cemex is proud to be leading the way in responsible water management for the building materials industry,” said Luis Farias, Cemex Vice President of Energy and Sustainability. “This is a logical next step to complement our sustainability achievements, including increasing alternative fuel substitution rates and the use of renewable energy in our operations. This water policy reinforces our commitment to establish strategic alliances with authorities and local stakeholders, such as the recently launched Fondo de Agua Metropolitano de Monterrey (Metropolitan Water Fund of Monterrey) in Monterrey, Mexico, where Cemex participates as a founding member, sponsor, and member of the Executive Committee.”
