Cemex Mexico recognised for GHG emissions and alternative fuel achievements

World Cement,

Cemex Mexico has been recognised for its environmental achievements by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico (SEMARNAT) and by the government of the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon.

SEMARNAT, together with the Commission of Private Sector Studies for Sustainable Development (CESPEDES) and the Business Coordination Council, run the Greenhouse Gas Effect Programme, to ensure that GHG emissions are measured. Under the programme, Cemex Mexico has received the GEI-2 award for its progress in managing GHG emissions and complying with a verified inventory. Its Tepeaca and Guadalajara cement plants won the GE-3 award for lowering GHG emissions and achieving certified performance indicators of carbon emissions management. The Tepeaca and Guadalajara plants cut their emissions by 233 000 t of CO2 and 200 000 t of CO2, respectively.

In addition, the government of Nuevo Leon presented Cemex Mexico with the Nuevo Leon Award for the Mitigation of GHG Emissions, under the ‘Alternative Fuel Substitution’ category. Since 2012, Cemex has been coprocessing the inorganic materials from urban solid waste (FIRSU®). Materials that can be not be recycled, such as paper, plastics and textiles, are sorted, shredded and then used as an alternative fuel in Cemex’s cement kilns. The cement and building materials producer coprocessed 84 000 t of FIRSU® in Mexico in 2013. Cemex coprocesses FIRSU® at its Atotonilco, Ensenada, Guadalajara, Huichapan, Merida, Tepeaca, Yaqui, Zapotiltic, Federal District and Monterrey plants. It aims to roll out the system to all of its cement plants by 2016.
