Cemex supplies a specialty ready-mix concrete for Hydroelectric Dam in Mexico

World Cement,

Cemex supplied a special mix of ready-mix concrete and tailor-made services for the repair of the Nezahualcoyotl Hydroelectric Dam in the Mexican state of Chiapas. The infrastructure project commonly known as the 'Malpaso Dam' remains one of Mexico’s most significant works of civil engineering since it was first erected in the 1960s.

The repair project called for a commercial supplier capable of delivering, in areas of difficult access, a special ready-mix concrete for the repair work of areas of the dam that are subject to environmental pressures.

The constant flow of water combined with high temperatures can increase the chances of deterioration over time, so cement that provides greater chemical resistance was chosen to minimise the effects of exposure and the pressure exerted on the structure of the dam. This in turn may reduce the frequency of maintenance work that could be required in the future.

In search of the right solution for the customer, Cemex provided a ready-mix concrete in varying strength classes designed with Portland Cement 30RS/BRA. This cement is sulphate-resistant with low alkali-aggregate reactivity and is used for structures that have direct contact with water and/or soils with sulphates or salts.

Additionally, Cemex installed two batch plants and three ice factories to control the mixture’s temperature. Boom pumps were used to supply approximately 14 000 m3 of concrete to work sites at varying heights.

According to the client, the timeline for the project’s execution was met with no delays, and as per the terms provided for in the contract.

By offering products and solutions of the highest quality, Cemex reaffirms its commitment to promote the development of infrastructure in Mexico and around the world, working closely with customers to meet the requirements of their projects and build a better future.
