TXI to close four wet process kilns in USA

TXI, formerly known as Texas Industries, USA, is to permanently close four of its wet process kilns in Midlothian, Texas, USA. The company plans to use this closure as “an opportunity to enhance the operational efficiency of TXI's modern (dry-process) kiln at the same plant," and it will also result in reduced emissions – great news for environmental activists in the region.

Further, this will allow TXI to implement upgrades to its existing dry process kiln and increase production in preparation for the forecast recovery in the North Texas construction market.

The four wet process kilns have been idle since 2008 as a result of weakened demand in the region. It has been reported that the current workforce of 170 will not be affected by this.

The announcement came six days after the US EPA officially overturned a 16 year old Texas air permitting programme it says violates the Clean Air Act. David Perkins, a TXI spokesperson, insisted that this was not a factor in the decision.
