Ecocem faces setbacks for Vallejo plant

World Cement,
According to the Irish Times, the Irish cement manufacturer Ecocem faces a potential planning setback regarding its proposed manufacturing plant in San Francisco Bay, after receiving almost 500 submissions challenging its environmental impact report.
The company is trying to get permission to construct a US$50 million grinding plant in Vallejo, near San Francisco. This would be its first venture into the US. However, local residents are objecting to the proposal for environmental reasons, with between 400 and 500 people and organizations questioning the company’s assessment of the factory’s impact on the environment. These queries could force Vallejo’s council to delay a decision on planning permission until 2016, possible even until March.
California law requires Orcem Americas, Ecocem’s subsidiary, to answer questions before preparing a final environmental impact report, as it is responsible for the project. The project will then have to be approved by the city’s Architectural Heritage and Landmarks Commission and the Vallejo Planning Commission and get the support of a majority of councilors before it can go ahead.
